About Cornell University

Cornell University, more commonly referred to as simply Cornell, is a private university located in Ithaca, which is a city that sits on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, in Central New York, USA, named after the Greek island of Ithaca, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 30 000 inhabitants, during the 2004 census, increasing 2.3% from 2000, when the city’s population was of approximately 29 300 inhabitants.

Cornell was founded by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, in 1865, as a coeducational, non-sectarian institution where admission was offered regardless of religion or race, the university’s motto, made after Ezra Cornell’s quotation, being: `I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study`.

There are more than 13 000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students from all 50 states and 122 countries, who are attending Cornell, to whom the university offers various educational programs in numerous fields of study, including curricula in traditional liberal arts studies, as well as in fields like agriculture, engineering, hotel administration, and city and regional planning.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Cornell is 15th among national universities, being placed on the 9th place as a `dream college`, by The Princeton Review, in 2006, for high school students and their parents, Newsweek naming Cornell the `Hottest Ivy`, in its 2007 listing of America’s 25 Hot Schools. The university’s interior design is also highly ranked, on the undergraduate and graduate levels by DesignIntelligence, which, in its annual edition of `America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools`, has ranked Cornell Bachelor of Design and Environmental Analysis program 4th in the nation, in 2010.

The athletic teams from Cornell are known as the Cornell Big Red, which compete in 36 varsity sports, in NCAA’s Division I Ivy League and ECAC Hockey, including in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), which is the largest athletic conference in North America, the most historically successful of the varsity teams, and the university’s most intently followed sport being the men’s ice hockey team.

Among the most resonant names on the list of notable alumni, there are: Isidor Isaac Rabi – Nobel Laureate in Physics, Lincoln D. Faurer - Director, National Security Agency, Norbert Wiener - mathematician, founder of the study of cybernetics, Vera Rubin - astronomer known for contributions to the study of dark matter, Jill Tarter - astronomer, Director of the Center for SETI Research, Harry Coover - Prolific product inventor, notably cyanoacrylate adhesives (Super Glue); member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and Thomas Midgley, Jr. - Inventor of Freon and tetra-ethyl lead, among others.
